SRSs are hard

Software Requirements Specification (SRS) are hard. Very hard. The hardest part is that is a lot invisible part. More invisible than programming. In programming you have the code. But In Tech Specs you only see the result of a mix of meetings, chats, brainstorming sessions, manager decisions, etc.

It's very difficult to measure how many time it will took. You have to consider first, how many times the organization has used it. If it's the first time, you'll have time to evangelize it and next make that all people involved agree. Next you have to do the analysis, you have to talk with a lot of people, mix all the viewpoints and resolve conflicts between requirements. When you have done that, you begin with the spec. You begin to write it and a lot of people have his own comments that you have to filter and select the best of it.

The next difficult step is to make people undestand that this document it's a kind of contract between user and the Software Engineer, that this document will be use to set the Gantt Chart, the WBS and so on.... The hardest part of it is to make understand the user that if he want to add a new requirement it has to be negotiated.

Many people looks specs as it has to be done, but they don't see it's usefulness. SRS help Software Engineer to know what things he has to do. And for the user, it sets a Warranty that what things will be done.

My laptop's dying

My laptop is sick. And It's my fault. I have flashed the BIOS to a new one and when I rebooted there's not POST screen, only a black screen and the lights on. I am asking HP if they can reflash the BIOS. I hope they can do that. It's my first laptop that my parents bought me as a graduation gift.

Setting up my home server...

I've installed Ubuntu on a Virtual Machine with VirtualBox and installed Apache+Php+MySQL+SSH+FTP... etc. It's my development server. By the moment, I have nothing. I've installed Wordpress so I expect in a couple of months to have a new blog with my own server.... I don't know. I don't expect a especific result. I'm doing just for fun.

I like development.I like to try to do things, although I didn't finished anything, I enjoy the travel.

If you want, you can see my home server. It has a standard Apache 2 start page.

If it doesn't work, is because I've shut down the computer or the VM because sometimes I travel or simply for cutting energy costs.

My first girlfriend's day job

I'm back in Santiago of Chile, back to the noise, the smog, the heat. Today is my girlsfriend birthday so I bought a cake, call some friends and celebrate. It was funny, we eat a delicious cake and we chat a lot and we laugh a lot.

It was a very good start. Now I'm listening the Club de la Comedia while writing this article. Club de la Comedia is a stand-up comedy show that's very funny and popular at Chile.

I can't wait to return to Concepcion. But I'm going to Laja at new year and next I'm going to camping with my girlfriend and another friends. It's my first summer without vacations, but I don't mind because I'm learning a lot of things.

It's summer in Chile and it's hot. I am very happy because my allergic condition begins to dissapear. Now that I live in the capital city of Chile, I'm trying to adapt to the hot climate. At Christmas I came to my parents house at Concepcion City, that is at south of Chile. I like it because is more cool climate. But I had to come back because I have to work. But It doesn't matter because I love my job. But I love my life more too so I'm gonna return there at new year.

Christmas

It's very hard to me to be in Christmas. I miss the days when I was a child and innocently wait for my Santa's Gift. Now, I only wait if there's not conflicts in my family. I have a lovely family, they're very united and like to do parties. But when I want to go to another place, conflicts appear.

My mother has empty nest syndrome plus symptoms of menopause, so anything can makes her cry and she feels lonely all time. That makes me feel guilty about the thing I wanna do alone. I love my mother and my family. But I am crossing the line that differentiates a men of a child. I'm building my own family, now it's a little familiy (only two), but is a family.

I would like to see my parents happy again, that they don't worry too much about me. I hope that this christmas will be very funny and enjoyable.

I like my current job.Sometimes is a bit disordered, but it's very dynamic, always I must to do something and always I have problems to solve.

I wouldn't like to work in a very safe work, I think that people makes old because they do always the same thing, zero motivation, zero challenge at all and zero chance to take their own choices. When the work is like that, people only think at money, and they don't see the opportunities.

Always try to look for dynamic work with an dynamic environment that because you will grow a lot in professional terms.

In-house vs Outsourcing development

I'd made a LinkedIn discussion about what's better. Now I work in a project with in-house development, but I had experienced what's to be in a project with its development outsourced.

First of all, I don't think that one of them is bad. It depends of what are we gonna do and how the software is critical for business. Critical software has to be built in-house, only for the reason that it has business issues that the company wouldn't like that others know about it. Very known software, with very known requeriments, and not critical, is better to outsource because you have to redirect the brains to more critical and important issues. Another way to outsource is when you need to explore a new technology and you need control of the budget (usually in-house R+D never stops eating it).

Sometimes there may be politics or strategic reasons to do in-house when outsourcing may be more appropiated. That is when, you want to create a team of developers that would be part of the company and will be developing the critical software in the future. The opposite is true, a public organization may outsource only to make grow some little companies, like startups.

Thinking in my country, I think that Chile needs more in-house development, we need to learn a lot. I think that if we want to be in digital revolution we have to develop more internal than external and create a very powerful knowlegdement base.

Thinking of a project

I want to do a project. I don't know what kind of project, but I would like to do something by my own.

I have some ideas, by example, a Web Based IDE, a Framework of something, some kind of killer app. But I need some boost.

I'm installing the tools first, I never care if they're not the correct tools. I want to take a road and see what happens. I think that real life is something like that. You only take ways, and try to get to some place, but along the way you can find more interesting things.

I don't like meetings...

Remember that I've mentioned communication at last post?.

Well, I keep my idea that communication is very good. But I don't like when there're meetings for everything. I think that in most cases there are other alternatives, go to the office or make a call to the interested, use Instant Messaging, use e-Mail, send a doc and tell it the put his reviews in it, etc.

I believe that meetings are initial and the last resort. Initial when you're starting a project and need to get ideas for it. And last when the project is running, I think that is good when there's a problem very hard to solve and involves many people. But it's very counterproductive when the meeting is for simple problems that are more easy to solve if the tasks are well asigned to specific people. Is like the classic joke: How many ... does it take to change a lightbulb?. You can find a lot of this kind of joke here.

Yes. You need to speak with another a people, and a lot. Forget meetings, they are boring, I'm talking about face to face talking with all people.

And Sorry to be aggresive at start. But I needed to call your attention. If you think that's not the way to do it. You're right. Calling genuine attention is more elaborated than that. You need to have a lot of patience, be empathic and very friendly. You need to win the another people confidence, and you can do that by talking, expressing and communicating.

So. Don't forget it, being and seeming, Isn't enough only to be good, you have to look good and others must realize about your habilities. How do you that?. Communicating!!!.

Sundays are elections in Chile

Sunday is election day in Chile. And It's the first time that I vote.

It was a ver dirty election. All candidates disqualifying each other. Frei, Arrate with the only objetive that is 'to win the rightys', they hadn't a government plan, still want to do the same thing. Marco has a government plan, but is lack of foundation, and I wouldn't like a president who doesn't know how to talk. Piñera hasn't improved his speech, says the same thing that four years before when has beaten by Michelle Bachelet. But he's the more solid between the four candidates.

I write in english because I want to correct somethings that are invented from concertationist to the foreigners:

The time has changed. Pinochet died, and the rightys doesn't want to be associated with him.
Lefties in practices are capitalists plus some social benefits to the poor people, but they aren't the lefties of 70s.
I think that Chile lacks of an identity on terms of politics. It seems that cold war hadn't ended here.
And yes. Crime is becoming a serious issue in Chile. It's not too strong enough, but If the government doesn't do anything, It could be.

Well, that's my thoughts. I'm not affiliated to any party. And I wan't to be affiliated too. It's my sincere opinion from a Chilean person.

Quietly active

To be productive, you need to be active, but doesn't mean that you have to put Nitrous Oxide on your feets. It's better that doing thing slowly but always doing well than doing faster and making mistakes repeatedly.

You need to be like a snail. The snail is slow, but doesn't stop moving. You can see it at a place, wait for a reazonable time and you will see it at a very different place. It's more useful to do little, but continuously well done work than try to do extremely faster and lose a lot of time fixing mistakes.

I know that I'm slow, so I'm trying this perspective. You can impress yourself when the job is done.

I don't hate Microsoft

I like Open Source Technologies, and I try to use a lot. But I don't like when peoples tries to satanize something because some people use it. I think that is very stupid to create a wall and put some people on one side or another.

I want to tell that I don't hate Microsoft and I don't hate Linux. Microsoft products are good in things that Linux World products don't, like user experience and researching in things that costs a lot, like Natal project. And Linux World products are good in things that Microsoft products don't, like servers, application servers and firewalls.

I'm working in a solution that uses both worlds. There're some Tomcat Servers that runs on Linux with Apache CXF Web Services. And there're some Microsoft Windows 2003 Servers thats runs ASP.NET pages with IIS. That pages uses the CXF Web Services without problems.

What are the advantages? Linux has very good monitoring capabilities, and have very few faults. But at the presentation layer, ASP.NET makes development very easy and its controls offers a more powerful user experience.

So. Think about it. There're no sides. There're tools.

The Chilean Development Model

How software is developed at Chile?. That's a very complicated question.

I'll tell my little own experience. Here, we don't create nothing, all is copied from some other great country. In practice, it depends of the software provider and the customers.

The provider defines the development model behind his tools. If the provider is Oracle, we use the development model behind Developer. If the provider is Microsoft, we use all around Web Services. If the provider is SAP... I hadn't used SAP, but friends told me that's a mess.

The customer defines the development model by contract. If the customer likes CMMI, we use CMMI. If the customer likes PMI, we use PMI. If the customer likes ISO 9000 Annex 3, we use that too. If the customer doesn't require them, we don't use it.

When the software is built. We don't refactor. Because is too risky at short run. We don't see the future risks involved at the long run. We don't learn from mistakes and still trying to do the things the same way that 10 years before.

Why am I talking so bad about my country in terms of Software Engineering?. Because I think that my country has the talent. But they don't try to use it. We can improve a lot, and it's matter of work. Yes, it's a lot of work, but we need to do that if we want to be a Developed Country.

I'm trying to practice my English. So I'm going to write in that language.

I've watched some videos and I have a lot of doubts. May be It's Choking to see a system with no desktop, but it's very interesting too. I see why it's focused on Netbooks.

I'm an browser superuser. When I turn on my Laptop the first app that I run is the browser. The only problem is that I like Firefox. Google Chrome OS is not a new idea. Do you remember when Microsoft integrated IE with Windows 98?. There will be a lot of lawsuits if there's no an alternative to Chrome. That makes me confirm that Google is going to be the next Microsoft.

I wouldn't like that Firefox are going to be the next Nestcape. I like Firefox.

What do you think about that?

Pequeños detalles consumen grandes tiempos

Esto me pasa por creer que me las sé todas. Pero bueno, a veces el orgullo obliga a equivocarse más rápido de lo común y así aprender más.

Estabamos revisando un query con el framework IBatis , es muy genial ya que permite poner sentencias SQL en un XML para luego ejecutarlas desde Java.

Por ejemplo:

Lo que está entre gatos es el parámetro y hago un alias a value que será el retorno del Select.

Muy genial, pero se nos ocurrió la genial idea de tener otras dos tablas (para proteger la información de la aplicación, se usarán otros nombres de tablas), una llamada DEPARTAMENTO y otra llamada PERSONAS_DEPARTAMENTO para tener la relación de personas que pertenecen a un determinado departamento.

E hice el siguiente query para buscar a que departamento pertenece una persona.

SELECT p.name , d.name as value

FROM PERSONAS p, DEPARTAMENTO d, PERSONAS_DEPARTAMENTO pd

WHERE p.id = pd.id_persona AND d.id = pd.id_depto AND p.name = #nombrePersona#

Al ejecutar con IBatis (vean el manual, no sean flojos). Me retornó el query null. Lo raro es que ya lo había ejecutado en el motor de base de datos sin problemas. Llamo a mi colega que tiene más experiencia para ver el problema. Y así perdimos el dia.

Resulto que despues de infructuosas 4 horas, era un maldito bug de IBatis en el cual no hacia nada si había en el query una tabla cuyo nombre fuera mezcla del nombre de otras tablas. Como por ejemplo PERSONAS_DEPARTAMENTO. Eso lo descubrió mi colega al cambiar el nombre de la tabla a PERSONA_DEPTO y ver que mágicamente el query se ejecutó... ¡plop!.

Así que no se confíen. Por muy potente que sea el framework, siempre tiene sus mañas.

Windows 7 Ultimate. Versión completamente original. La estoy probando, hasta ahora super bien, no me ha dado problemas. Ha funcionado tan bien que creo que este post va a ser un poco fome para los detractores de Microsoft.

En fin, de a poco le ido pillando las capacidades de este sistema. A medida que vaya encontrando cosas interesantes se las iré informando.

El hacer nada...

No, no soy promotor de Limon Soda ni nada por el estilo. Aunque si me regalan el premio del Rey por un Año no me enojo.

El tema va por acá en otro sentido.

Es importante no hacer nada. No solo cuando uno termina algo, sino también cada cierto tiempo cuando uno está haciendo las cosas. Cuando uno siempre está corriendo, es dificil detenerse y darse cuenta de que hay una tienda o alguién más tiene lo que uno ya necesita. O simplemente está ahí mismo, pero uno va tan rápido que no lo ve.

El detenerse a leer, a analizar, a estudiar me ha ayudado muchas veces a simplificar lo que hago cotidianamente para hacerlo cada vez de forma más óptima. Y el no hacer nada, ayuda a que mi cerebro tenga oxigeno y pueda reestructurarse a los nuevos requerimientos de la vida y el trabajo.

Asi que, cada vez que no tengan nada que hacer, aprovechen el momento, relajense o vean otra cosa que no esté relacionado con lo que hacen comunmente. Es increible como se refresca la mente y salen ideas que los pueden sorprender.

Una idea simple y loca

¿Qué tal si sacamos de nosotros todas esas ideas frustradas que llevamos por harto tiempo?. Las reunimos formando una gran bola de nieve de creatividad. ¿Qué lograríamos?.

Sería muy interesante, en todo sentido. Sobretodo cuando muchas ideas se cruzan de acuerdo a los distintas intenciones y objetivos. Por ejemplo, yo quiero crear un cohete a la Luna, pero ¿cómo compatibilizo con la idea de querer fomentar el ahorro de combustible?. En ese momento es la oportunidad de crear algo nuevo. De esos choques se genera la innovación.

Nunca ocurre cuando es todo miel sobre hojuelas. Cuando está todo bien, no se siente esa necesidad de mejora, de crecimiento y las ideas no salen. Pero como todo en la vida, se puede hacer trampa, como por ejemplo, ver las necesidades de otro o las necesidades del mundo.

Pero en fin, mi pregunta es... Si tuvieran una plataforma donde lanzar sus ideas, ¿las publicarían?. Piensenlo, si son egoistas, su idea nunca se verá reflejada en el mundo. ¿Prefieren morir con una idea que nunca se concretó o morir sabiendo que su idea fue considerada buena por alguien y le saco el provecho que uno no pudo?.

Piensenlo...

Google Wave. ¿Ola de qué?

Todavía no le pillo la maña a esto de Google Wave. Veo que se pueden postear cosas, pero nada más. No es intuitivo como las otras aplicaciones que ha desarrollado Google.

Espero que después del preview cambie la cosa. Aunque sinceramente creo que Facebook ya está establecido y si Wave no ofrece algo distinto y complementario, no veo la razón para cambiarme.

Creo que habrá que esperar...

Que podía haberlo crackeado, conseguirmelo por otro lado, algún amigo por ahí, etc.

El tema es que... ¡me compré Windows 7!. Y para más remate el Ultimate.

No sé, siempre he querido tener un software comercial original comprado por mí. Un simple capricho. Es como cuando te compras esos CDs de algún grupo musical sabiendo que puedes tener la discografía completa en MP3.

¿Fanatismo?... No creo.
¿Capricho?... puede ser.
¿Miedo a lo ilegal?... No.
¿De sobrao?... No me haré popular con tener Windows 7.

Tal vez quiero la caja, con los sellos, o también la oportunidad de que si me pasa cualquier cosa tomar el teléfono y decirle a algún ejecutivo de Microsoft que su S.O. funciona mal.

Al fin, ya lo compré. Y sí, lo pude tener pirateado... Pero no quise.

Si. Estoy muy flojo, y no es falta de tiempo. Es sinceramente flojera, ocio.

Me carga cuando la gente dice 'no tengo tiempo', porque se que es mentira.

Increiblemente siempre el tipo que dice 'no tengo tiempo' es el mismo que dice 'no tengo plata'.

Y más increíble es el hecho de que ese mismo personaje es el que dice 'no sé', 'no es mi responsabilidad', 'no es mi problema', 'no lo hago gratis', 'nadie me paga por ello', 'nadie me lo dijo'.

Justo coincide también que es la persona que estudia solo por el simple hecho de tener un titulo, y obtener mejores ingresos. Pero no porque realmente le guste, le interese y mucho menos emocionar.

Es el típico personaje que en vez de ver la oportunidad, ve el riesgo, el miedo, la perdida de la falsa seguridad.

Creo que últimamente he tenido de ese personaje. Es increiblemente como nos absorbe la máquina.

Pero como dicen, hay que darle no más y ponerle todo el empeño del mundo.

Adicción al Café

Debo admitirlo. Me encanta el Café. A veces llego a tomar más de 4 al día, de repente intento compensar con un poco de té, o a veces con Coca-Cola.

La verdad es que no me preocupa. Un tiempo me preocupó. Al final es una estupidez tratar de dejar algo que uno le gusta mucho.

Creo que hay una gran relación entre el trabajo de oficina y el café. Sobretodo con la informática. ¿Cuántas noches universitarias donde tuve el termo y el café al lado de la mesa para manteneme despierto mientras estudiaba. O cuando estaba frente al computador, nunca faltaba el café. Sobretodo como gran estímulo para programar o efectuar otras tareas creativas.

¿Hay algún informático quien no haya tenido que recurrir alguna vez al gran amigo café? Denme sus opiniones.

Leo en SciDev.Net que Chile ha disminuido el financiamiento en proyectos cientificos. Probablemente esto sea en parte causa de la crisis que debió derivar el presupuesto del gobierno a otros fondos para apagar el incendio (digase bonos, subsidios, etc).

Lamentablemente para que nuestro país crezca, debe crecer la inversión en I+D ya que mientras Chile no desarrolle algo por su cuenta, seguiremos siendo un simple exportador de materias primas que las termina comprando de vuelta a través de productos elaborados. Por otra parte la I+D permite crear nuevas empresas, fomentando de dicha forma la creación de nuevos empleos.

Se pueden establecer varias medidas al respecto. No basta con los subsidios a los estudiantes de Doctorado. Se deberían ofrecer incentivos a las empresas para que inviertan en capital de riesgo. Para crear productos innovadores que sean el orgullo de nuestro país. También se debería fomentar la creatividad y el emprendimiento en la educación. Así como también la educación en la economía personal, de esta forma los profesionales en corto tiempo pueden tener independencia económica para realizar nuevos proyectos y empresas.

En fin, es importante tener conciencia acerca de la importancia de I+D en el desarrollo de nuestro país.

Se nota que estaba alejado del mundo Linux. No había escuchado de Mint ni de Sabayon. Las cuales, según lo que leí del artículo, me parecen muy interesantes.
